Weighted-category and total-points gradebooks answer different questions. This calculator keeps those methods separate, normalizes the current grade over completed work, and then solves the remaining contribution needed for a chosen course target.
Total points mode
Enter earned and possible points for each assignment. Optional drop-lowest removes the lowest percentage row, and a separate completed-course-weight input connects that points result to the final-grade scenario.
Required final-grade formula
The calculator subtracts weighted points already earned from the target, then divides by remaining course weight. The displayed formula exposes the substituted values so the result can be checked.
Impossible, secured, and policy-dependent results
A required average above 100% is normally impossible without extra credit or a policy change; a result below 0% means the target is already secured under the entered assumptions. Letter thresholds and rounding are only references.

Frequently asked questions
Should I use weighted or points mode?
Use weighted categories when the syllabus assigns percentages to categories. Use total points when the course grade is earned points divided by possible points.
Do completed weights need to total 100%?
No. Enter only completed weighted categories; their sum represents completed course weight, and the calculator treats the rest as remaining.
How does drop lowest work?
In points mode it excludes the entered row with the lowest earned percentage. Confirm whether your real policy drops by percentage, raw score, or only within one category.
Why is the required grade above 100%?
The target cannot be reached through ordinary remaining points under the entered scores and weights unless extra credit or another policy changes the model.
Is the letter grade official?
No. The A–F label uses a simple reference scale; your institution may use different thresholds, rounding, caps, or plus/minus grades.
